Updates and news from the photographer

Photos - Triathlon

May 29th, 2008 S. T. McDole

Added an event section under galleries and photos from a triathlon I covered. A quick news snippet added to the home page for guests first arriving can know where to find recently added things. To anyone looking for the triathlon photos I hope you enjoy them.

Oh, and some photos of mine are now on display at coachlevi.com and clearfieldcycling.com.  Check both places out.

Website - Fine Art gallery up

May 28th, 2008 S. T. McDole

I added the fine art gallery to the website.  This leaves the concept, food, photojournalism and sports galleries to go.  Odds are the next new gallery will be the food followed by photojournalism.  Sports and concept will likely be last as there are some things left to mess with concerning those.

Two photos in the fine art should look familiar.  Photos 1 and 7 of Landscapes/Scenes were moved to that gallery. Under the old system I didn’t know where else to put them for the time being.  So either before or after adding the food gallery I will likely update Landscape/Scenes.

Web Site: The Update

May 21st, 2008 S. T. McDole

Well, officially began the process of upgrading the web page.  I removed the contest gallery as it seemed redundant.  Some of the galleries still need to be built up, but these are the ones planned.  There is another hint to what is to come if you look carefully.

Website News: Updates

May 19th, 2008 S. T. McDole

While I can’t give an ETA yet, I have been working on some technical updates for the main web page. Most of them minor such as updating the Google Analytics code to reflect the new domain name. Two big updates are also coming. One of which that is hopefully nearing completion is the inclusion of the news for my site actually being on my site now, McDole Photography News MK. II.

There are some kinks to work out before it goes live, but it works to get things done. I’ll begin copying the posts in this news bog over to it before that update.

More news to come on this.

Current Practice: Night Photography

May 9th, 2008 S. T. McDole

Greetings. Just dropping a line so it isn’t assumed that I have died.

Hopefully I will soon have some results from playing around after learning about star trail photography. It is regretful I don’t have the disposable income to follow the instructions properly. My digital camera only allows for 30 seconds of open shutter, not quite long enough according to the guides I have read. Namely in the hour range. My Canon AE-1 has the ability, but the problem of developing film.

So for the time being I will experiment with different errors warned about when shooting star trails. Perhaps the results can be useful in certain situations. Maybe some of them will yield possible entries for the Clearfield County Fair this year.

It looks like this year I will be entering the entering the Professional category. In either case last year was the final year I could enter the Senior V group due to age. The rules are simple, 2 photos per class:

*Color (Non-digital)
*Black and White (Non digital)
*Anything Digital.

Experimentation: Eggs and Video

May 5th, 2008 S. T. McDole

Added to the list of things I have been experimenting with is photo videos. I had used Windows Media Maker, but its tendency to crash under certain circumstances* have prompted me to look for a different video editing software that would be hopefully free and easy to use.

The results of my experimentation is the following video. The first is a glitched version due to compression errors. The second is a more finalized version. The song in the background is “Still Alive” written by Jonathan Coulton for Portal, sung by Ellen McLain as GLaDOS within the game. The song was chosen at random, i.e. my playlist that was running while working on this happened to be on it when I began toying with audio.

My first attempt involved Virtual Dub. A tool that seems nice, but looks too hard to sync the audio to the photos for the quick turn around I wish to shoot for. Currently I am giving Jahshaka a try. Not quite a pick up and begin using with no problems program, but I think I am getting the hang of it enough to use. I have Gordian Knot downloaded, but it scares me.

Both of these videos were made through Virtual Dub, but I have learned to to achieve similar results with Jarshaka with less work.

"Macro" - playing around

When I get enough “Macro” photos I might create a new gallery for them. For now I am busy with one other private project and the planning of two more for work.

This particular photo isn’t much. Just an ant of a series I ran across while doing some stock photography for work. The originally this photo should have been left vertically, but for some reason I like how the crack in the tree’s trunk looks more like a cave this way.
